Learning to see.

I've been teaching photography at Bismarck State College since 1999. My students aren't traditional college students. They're people who always meant to learn photography, or just got a new camera and have no idea what half the buttons do, or finally retired and decided now is the time. I love that group. No pretense, genuine curiosity, and nobody taking notes just to pass a test. My approach is simple. I tell you how something works. Then I show you. Then you do it. That's it. No jargon for the sake of jargon. You came here to make better photos and that's what we're going to work on. Fundamentals matter more than gear. You don't need an expensive camera to take a great photograph. You need to understand light, and you need to slow down long enough to actually see what's in front of you. We spend a lot of time on both of those things. If you're curious about current courses, the Bismarck State continuing education schedule is the best place to look.

Student Resources

If you've taken one of my courses and want to keep going between sessions, I maintain a free resource library at BisManPhoto.com. It includes a camera assessment tool that gives you personalized camera recommendations, a skill library with field guides on specific photography challenges, and a free downloadable guide for anyone who signs up. No account required to access most of it.
